WHAT’S IN A NAME:
DANIEL AGGER
Every home match Liverpool FC’s official matchday programme
ponders the question: ’What does a player’s name say about
their personality?’
It offers a quirky insight into life on and off the pitch with
a whole host of random questions that inspire answers you
won't find in your average football interview.
Here Daniel Agger explains why Jamie Carragher is his choice
for worst dressed in the Liverpool squad, why he finds English
television a bit strange and reveals why Girls Aloud just
aren't his cup of tea.
D DEDICATED FOLLOWER
OF FASHION
WHO'S THE MOST STYLISH MEMBER OF THE FIRST TEAM SQUAD?
Everyone has their particular tastes but I've got to say me. I
have my own individual style and I'm comfortable with it. No
one else at the club wears the same kind of gear as me.
AND THE WORST DRESSED?
That's easy. It's got to be Jamie Carragher. He wears some
ridiculous stuff. There are a few contenders but I think Carra
really stands out. Andriy Voronin is up there too.
WHAT WAS YOUR COSTUME FOR THE RECENT FANCY DRESS PARTY?
I went as a punk. But I really liked Stevie's costume. It was
brilliant and definitely the funniest of the night. We
couldn't look at him without laughing.
A AROUND THE WORLD
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT GOING BACKPACKING?
No, travelling has never really interested me. I'm happy just
going back to Copenhagen for my holidays; that's my idea of a
perfect vacation. I enjoy spending time there with my friends
and family. It doesn't get any better than that.
N NIGHTLIFE
DO YOU PREFER SPENDING AN EVENING OUT WITH THE LADS OR IN WITH
THE MISSUS?
It's an easy answer but I hope my girlfriend doesn't read
this. It's got to be a night out with the lads because we
always have a really good laugh. I'll be in trouble if she
hears I've said that.
I IN THE RESTAURANT
TRADE
HOW HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR NEW BUSINESS VENTURE?
It's been good and I'm enjoying it. Nothing is ever
straightforward; there are always surprises. But I think
running a good restaurant is all about how you handle those
unexpected problems.
IS IT BETTER THAN CARRA'S NEW EATERIE?
(Laughs) As the owner of one I don't think it would be fair
for me to compare them. My opinion would obviously be biased.
CAN YOU COOK?
I'm not bad. Before I came here I lived alone for a year and I
was cooking dinner every night. I don't know if it was any
good but I always ate it.
E EURO 2008
WHO'S YOUR MONEY ON TO TAKE THE TITLE?
Don't mention that! There's a lot of really good teams in the
competition and picking a winner is a very tough task. I hope
Spain can go all the way because of the lads here. It would be
good for Pepe Reina, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Alvaro
Arbeloa if they could be successful.
ANY REGRETS IN THE DANISH CAMP?
Yeah, because we have a good team but we didn't perform well
enough. It just wasn't up to the standards we know we can
reach and that's the most disappointing part. Spain, Sweden
and Northern Ireland all finished ahead of us in the
qualifying group. We know we have to do better next time and
hopefully make it to South Africa for the World Cup.
L LATEST RELEASES
HAVE YOU SEEN ANY GOOD MOVIES RECENTLY?
(After much thought) I can't recall too many but one that
sticks in my mind is 'Shooter' with Mark Wahlberg. That was
probably the last really good film I watched.
DO YOU WATCH MUCH TV?
Yeah, but none of the UK channels. I mainly try to look at
Danish TV. It's good because I can keep an eye on what's
happening back home. Television in England is very different
to what I was used to. I find it a little strange.
A AWAY GOAL RULE
IS IT A GOOD OR BAD IDEA?
It's got to be good because it always encourages the away team
to come out and play. They know they can't just sit back and
do nothing. That used to happen a lot in European football but
not so much nowadays. You know if you can score at your
opponents' ground it's worth double and that's a major
incentive. At the same time it makes your task more difficult
when you're the home team, like when we were in the Champions
League semi-final against Chelsea. You know you can't go all
out attack in case the opposition score so it is something you
have to think about. Thankfully we keep a lot of clean sheets
and did so again that night.
G GIRLS ALOUD
DO YOU PREFER THEM OR THE SPICE GIRLS?
Who? (After a brief explanation) I've never heard of Girls
Aloud but I know who the Spice Girls are. Unfortunately it's
not my kind of music, not at all. It just doesn't interest me
so I can't pick one over the other. (Laughs)
G GIANT CENTRE
FORWARDS
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH PLAYING AGAINST BIG GUYS LIKE Peter
Crouch, JOHN CAREW OR DIDIER DROGBA?
There are plenty of strikers like that in this league;
probably too many! Of course I knew that would be the case
before I came here. Back in Denmark you rarely play against
forwards of that size, whereas over here it happens almost
every week. You are aware of their presence and what they can
do, and you have to deal with it in the best way possible.
It's not easy but it's part of the game.
E ENGLISH BREAKFAST
CAN YOU SEE THE ATTRACTION?
No, not at all. (Laughs) Back home breakfast usually consists
of different kinds of bread with marmalade, cheese and juice.
I'd never have a fry-up. Thankfully the canteen at Melwood
gives us a few different options so everyone can get exactly
what they want.
R RETURNING TO ACTION
IS THIS THE LONGEST SPELL YOU'VE ENDURED ON THE SIDELINES?
No. When I was a kid I was out of action for about a year. But
it wasn't like now when I have to train every day to keep fit.
I was able to spend time with my friends and do other things
to keep me occupied. Whereas when you're a footballer and you
can't play it's really frustrating. To be honest I'm not the
best spectator. I hate sitting in the stands watching the lads
and knowing I can't be involved. I've been close to a comeback
a couple of times only to suffer a setback. But injuries are a
part of the game and I chose to do this so I've go to deal
with it. I'm nearly 100 per cent now so hopefully I won't have
to wait too much longer.
